Suburban BushCrafter Youtube Channel Update

A Suburban BushCrafter Update: Here are several of my favorite rucks, airing-out on the laundry line out back....they haven't seen much use in several months due to various personal set-backs. I didn't make it into the woods a single time over the last Winter months and I haven't posted any new Suburban BushCrafter content since New Year's day 2016, but never-the-less the YouTube Channel is still growing and approaching 2000 subscribers. I hope to get things back to normal very soon and get back into the woods for more adventures. For now, you can check out some of my older videos at http://www.suburbanbushcrafter.com/ Thanks friends, for the continued support.

You can also now follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/suburban_bushcrafter/

An Early Autumn Ramble

When I venture into the woods, it has very little to do with getting from point "A" to point "B" as quickly as humanly possible. It's much more about living in the moment, and cherishing the life I have:

German Military Surplus Rucksacks!

The German military rucksacks, available in surplus stores and online here in the U.S. make great rucks for bushcraft, day hiking, and other woods-adventures. Here is a film about two of them!

More Leather Work -- Rusticated Trade Knife Sheath

Here is a sheath I made for my own personal Jeff White Nesmuk style skinner. I distressed and rusticated the leather in order to give it a look to match the period of this trade knife. I also put extra holes in the loop and at the top of the welt in order to allow attachment points for easy lashing to a pack or belt or what suits the situation.

Also, here is my latest thought on knives on Suburban BushCrafter:

First Hand-Carved Wooden Spoon

In between fielding phone calls about something I really don't feel like dealing with, I sat in the unusual relative quiet of my back porch and roughed in my first wooden spoon with a Morakniv Classic 2/0. I have a MoraKniv 164 hook knife in-bound for carving the bowl...stay tuned!

Thanks to Norwegian Bushcraft for the inspiration:

Heres an update, one day later:

Again today, in-between fielding unpleasant, unproductive phone calls, I sat on the back porch and completed work on my first bushcraft spoon. I carved the entire thing with the pictured Morakniv Classic 2/0, the Morakniv 164 spoon knife that just arrived today, and a bit of sand paper. Can anybody tell me what type of wood I have used?...I'm suspecting Black Walnut or else Oak, but I am not sure. Also I need a suggestion for an oil to put on the spoon so I can use it to stir my coffee when I am out in the bush.

Back view--
I've been told by an artist friend it might be Spalted Maple....which makes sense. It was a very well-seasoned piece at the bottom of a firewood pile:

Hand Made Knives - Making Progress

I finally got around to finishing the rough-in of my next two handmade blades  in 01 steel.

It's amazing how quickly you wear out those name-brand hacksaw blades....stay tuned!

Sony Action Camera Test Footage

Here are a couple of short videos that are tests of a new Sony AS10V Action Cam...yep finally got one of these because it was cheaper than a GoPro, but I'm not yet convinced I made the right choice....just simply because of the accessories that are available for the GoPro.... I'll give it a whirl though, and use it in some of my adventure videos for sure.

If anybody wants to send me a GoPro Hero 3 to check out...I'd be glad to work it over!

Here are those quick shorts with the Action Cam that were shot on a recent walk:

Also, I took advantage of the free download of the GoPro Studio software from GoPro....the main reason was that it gives me a quick and easy way to process some time-lapse footage.....which you can do with jpegs from any old camera that shoots a time lapse sequence, such as my Nikon D700...still coming up with some ideas for that one.

The clips above were edited in the GoPro software. I added some vignetting to the corners and took advantage of one of the toning presets called "1970's"  It looks pretty interesting.

Stay tuned for more adventures to be documented with these new tools in my tool box!

Here is one more late addition to the test footage:

ILBE Rucksack -- First Impressions

In this short video, I am trying out my "new" ILBE rucksack system. I plan on a part two to this video where I will be discussing my developing philosophy about the pack, and how I plan to fit it into my system.

A Spoon for All Outdoor Occasions

If I could take just one eating utensil into the bush, it would be a good spoon. Weighing a negligible 0.57 oz, the Toaks long-handled titanium spoon is perfect.
The polished bowl is great for chow when I want to feel more like I am at home than in some cold shelter and the ergonomic handle dips deeply into freeze dried meals without mess.
Call it a boutique item, but considering titanium cookware, it is a nice option at $9.95. I will never need another... unless a buddy walks off with it in his pack, blaming a bear.
Here is a link to my video review of the spoon and the Toaks Outdoor 750ml pot:
